The IDC Retail Insights research team focusing on retail store, channels and consumer strategies research is busy on two key studies around OmniChannel Commerce and Marketing, where we are analyzing best methods and practices, identifying the maturity model and benchmarking vendor capabilities. The research so far inspired me a lot of thoughts around frameworks for innovations and OmniChannel architecture design principles. A couple of months ago IDC launched four cross-disciplinary 3rd Platform pillar teams--cloud services, mobility and broadband, social business, and big data and analytics. These serve as the loci for our corporate-wide research and publication strategies in each area. I represent IDC Retail on the big data and analytics pillar team--naturally enough as its charter aligns with my research focus. Building on the team's work to date and my own ongoing research I've just completed Business Strategy: The Big Data and Analytics Pillar of 3rd Platform Retail IT. I'll summarize the report's conclusions and guidance here.

Leslie Hand and I attended Oracle's annual retail executive conference, CrosstTalk 2012, in Chicago. Over 250 retail executives representing 120 retailers from 18 countries endured the sweltering temperatures of an early summer heat wave that turned the windy city into a sauna. The heat didn't wilt anyone's enthusiasm during sessions Leslie and I attended--a handful of the 30-plus concurrent sessions Oracle and keynote sessions Oracle packed into two busy days.

Traceability in the food supply chain is becoming a focal point for grocers on a number of fronts. While traceability systems have been in place for food manufacturers for some time, the increase in private label brands have pushed grocery retailers into the hot seat as they try to build strong brands, protect consumers from food safety issues, and comply with the latest government and industry mandates.
