First, the good news: Companies are making progress in environmental sustainability. In IDC's fourth annual Green IT and Sustainability Study (October 2011), 40% of U.S. respondents indicated that their company has a sustainability report, meaning sustainability is increasingly a corporate-level priority and companies are documenting their sustainability performance.

Last year, IDC Manufacturing Insights revealed the Warranty Capability Maturity Model (WCMM), a framework for assessment and continuous improvement in warranty management. Three companies, Mitsubishi Caterpillar Forklift America Inc.,Volvo Powertrain and Case New Holland have adopted the model and put their companies through the rigors of self assessment.

We were very happy that President Obama's recent State of the Union address included a call to expand our manufacturing base in the United States.  There is clear consenus that manufacturing is a signifcant factor in a nation's economic competitiveness and, in some polls, is identified as the single most important factor.  As we venture into the world of government influenced industrial policy, I would like to remind our readers of something we wrote back in October of 2009...

    Good question.  I think manufacturers are working to retain those employees that are willing to change with the business and with the technology that's increasingly part of their everyday life.  But no data to prove that theory, unfortunately.

    I agree with your comments in the webcast and also am of the same opinion, and think that manufacturers need to take small steps on this journey since it is not an on/off switch that they need to use, but a process in which they make improvement after improvement since a lot of learning will happen along the way.
