SMB3.0 - a double edged sword for storage vendors?

With Windows 8 off to a slow start, Microsoft may have inadvertently given storage players additional time to offer support for SMB3.0. Meanwhile with Microsoft Storage server 2012, Microsoft has opened up a front to compete with these storage players - especially in the lower end of the market.

Scale-out meets virtualization

For the longest time (and even now) most virtualization deployments occur on scale-up storage platforms. However in the past few months several vendors have announced support for virtualization platforms such as vSphere/ESX (as a starting point) and RHEV on their scale-out file and object based platforms. Is this trend here to stay? What is driving this trend? Let's explore.
