This IDC blog post provides details around our latest IDC SMB Infographic
File sync and share services have been a critical driver for SMB mobile app spending growth since the first disruption brought about by organic BYOD trends began in 2007-2008. The prevalence of cloud capabilities and mobile devices has driven the adoption of FSS, which is often one of the first cloud experiences a smaller enterprise faces. However, the SMB FSS journey from 'free consumer' to 'paid business' has historically been unplanned and organic: Line of Business (LOB) drives an initial, unsanctioned deployment that IT eventually discovers, and only then is a strategic content collaboration framework put in place, supported by a business FSS solution.
However, in the past 18 months, efforts by major vendors to evangelize secure content access has resulted in a proactive move by IT to deploy and support paid FSS, the result of a growing IT leadership movement to articulate themselves as consultative change agents working alongside, rather than against, LOB leaders.
According to our latest U.S. SMB Mobile Workforce Survey, one-third of U.S. midmarket firms have implemented business FSS (e.g. paid.) And, according to our latest SMB eFSS infographic, another 36% are actively planning to roll out paid FSS over the next 18 months, indicating that business FSS has gone mainstream. Below are major trends IT leaders should take into account when selecting and implementing paid FSS:
- Work with a vendor who can support, either directly or through partners, seamless integration with legacy ECM or data sources. According to our SMB mobility surveys, most mobile project failures occur due to an inability to support integration between new and legacy solutions.
- Millennial led firms are setting the pace when it comes to using cloud and mobile IT to outcompete their peers. IT leaders in these organizations are prioritizing speed to market when deploying any new IT project. Working with a vendor who can accelerate deployment speed to reduce time to value should be a consideration when selecting a FSS supplier. Those that can deliver the most value in the shortest timeframe are well positioned to help maintain customer competitiveness.
