The federal government's effort to establish and strengthen Trusted Internet Connections (TCI) has been around since at least 2007. Similar efforts have existed for years prior to that. Yet in the wake of massive data breeches at the IRS and the Office or Personnel Management, the issue is again moving to the forefront. Here's a brief primer on the concept, and what some follow-up efforts could mean to federal agencies.

The Trusted Internet Connection initiative originally was mandated in an OMB Memorandum (M-08-05) issued in November 2007. One of the main efforts related to the memorandum was reduction in external connections coming into federal agencies, including Internet points of presence. Monitoring and security would be boosted for the remaining connection points.
