GovLoop + GovDelivery = GovCommunications x 2

By Adelaide OBrien

Today's announcement that GovDelivery purchased GovLoop,  merging government-to-citizen communication with government-to-government communication, is an addition where possibly 2 + 2 = much more than 4. Established in May 2008 by Steve Ressler, GovLoop has over 18,000 government, and government supporting contractors as on-line members. Ressler established this "Facebook for Feds" as a way for government employees to connect, work, and share ideas, all for the betterment of government. According t

Government Beyond the Keyboard: Human Data Interfaces

By Shawn P. McCarthy

When it comes to the human interfaces that are used to enter data into a computer system, most, but not all, government employees rely on two common devices, a mouse and a keyboard. A handful of slightly less common devices, such as touch screens, tablet-based computers, and maybe voice recognition systems, also are in use. But there are many other devices that can be used for human input of data (as opposed to data that is collected in an automated fashion.)  Here are some of the devices that can be f

By Adelaide OBrien

Today's announcement  Cureton tabbed as next NASA chief information officer -- Government Computer News signals good news for the agency as Linda Cureton will bring to this position her savvy leadership, sense of humor, participative style, and ability to frame complex issues into everyday analogies that many can identify with. You DON'T Want "An App For That"

By Shawn P. McCarthy

Apple's iPhone App Store consistently tells you "there's an app for that," no matter what your question might be. Find a restaurant? Check your stock quotes or the weather? Yup, there's an app for that. More than one in fact. Apple may be the most vocal promoter of cell-phone based applications, but it's far from alone. Some government agencies have developed their own phone and address book apps. I have a pocket full of apps that run on my Google Android phone, and there's a growing market for applications

WiMax: Always Just Over the Horizon for Gov Networks

By Shawn P. McCarthy

Will WiMax ever get its due as a major player in government metropolitan area networks? It’s a great technology which always seems to be waiting on the horizon – with experts claiming it's just a year or two away from major deployment. But WiMax has been waiting right there on the horizon since 2002. I tend to think of WiMax as a bit like George Jetson’s flying car. Great idea. Functional examples exist in several places. But broad penetration never quite takes off.

Is Stimulus Stimulating for Government IT?

By Thom Rubel – 4 Comments

We get bombarded with inquiries about government stimulus programs.  Basically, many vendors want to know where to line up for the money.  This makes for a long conversation about the fact that governments worldwide are spending into the commercial sector – infrastructure, transportation, construction, energy, healthcare (U.S.) etc.  If you're focused on the actual government IT market, it's probably  time to rethink your approach.  In the U.S., the actual dollars allocated to

Check out the new government on-line store at Apps.Gov , a new GSA hosted website, offering no less than 22 software applications for federal agencies who want to adopt the latest in social networking applications. Applications are designed to support this administration's push to federal government to engage the public in policy discussions, work across all levels of government, and provide services and information to the public the way that the public communicates.

Google Cloud for Gov: Big Potential, Big Issues

By Shawn P. McCarthy

Keep an eye on the horizon for Google’s Cloud solutions for the federal government. Known as Google for the Public Sector, they should materialize early next year. Whether agencies choose to adopt these cloud offerings will come down to price, availability, reliability, overall functionality and security. Because of this, we predict that it will take more than just a couple of years for Google to establish a firm foothold  in this area.
